President Boni Yayi of Benin to Visit UNESCO on 29 JuneThe President of Benin, Boni Yayi, will carry out an official visit to UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on Thursday, 29 June. This will be his first visit to the Organization since his election as President in April this year.
President Yayi will give a lecture on the subject of “Democracy and Development,” to the Ambassadors and Permanent Delegates of Member States to UNESCO and to the Organization’s staff. The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura will welcome the President. Xinsheng Zhang, President of UNESCO’s Executive Board, and Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, President of UNESCO’s General Conference, will then take the floor (Room X, from 12.30, noon, to 1.30 p.m.).
The President of Benin will also hold a meeting with the Director-General of UNESCO during his visit.
Benin has been a member of UNESCO since 18 October 1960. Its Royal Palaces of Abomey were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985 and the Gelede traditions were proclaimed a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. The country is also a member of the network of Man and the Biosphere Reserves. It furthermore numbers three UNESCO Chairs and hosts an International UNESCO-UNEVOC Centre for technical and vocational education.
