09-06-2006 2:00 pm The 2007 cycle for the UNESCO-L’OREAL Fellowships programme, targeting young women pursuing vocations in the life sciences is now underway. An announcement letter has been sent to National Commissions for UNESCO along with conditions and criteria. These documents are available on line*. (Click on “How to apply” to find the application form.)
Ninety young scientists from all continents have already received these fellowships, which aim to stimulate life sciences research and promote active participation in research projects by young women students (up to age 35) in fields including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology and physiology. At the last awards ceremony for the 15 fellowships in March 2006, UNESCO and L’Oréal announced that their value would now be raised from US$ 20,000 to US$ 40,000, and their duration extended from one to two years.

Applications for 2007 must be received by UNESCO by 15 September 2006. Each must be presented and endorsed by the National Commission for UNESCO in the young scientist’s country. Candidates are required to be proficient in reading and writing in the language of instruction in the proposed country of study.
