Conference of Elected Representatives of the Mediterranean
With a view to forging a stronger partnership with parliamentarians and others elected representatives in associating them more closely with the implementation of its programmes, UNESCO organized in cooperation with ISESCO, in Rabat, on 28 and 29 June 2006, the first Conference of Elected Representatives of the Mediterranean.

The participants were the Mayors of capitals or their alternates, other elected representatives and Focal Points for UNESCO in the Mediterranean Region. They met for two days to analyse the means and ways of enhancing their cooperation with UNESCO at local, national and regional levels in order to promote the objectives of the Organization in their local and national agenda and legislation in the Mediterranean Region.

This Conference addressed five priority UNESCO themes: (i) Education for All, (ii) International conventions, (iii) Access to water, (iv) Promotion of human rights and democracy, (v) Access to information and knowledge and (vi) UNESCO's action with and for young people. An introductory session was dedicated to mechanisms of partnership with Elected Representatives at the national level (parliamentarians, mayors and local authorities).

In conclusion of this Conference, the participants adopted a Declaration that you will find herewith the French and English texts.
