Director-General awarded honorary doctorate by Haverford College, USA

14-05-2006 - On 14 May 2006, Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Haverford College, during the annual Commencement ceremonies of the College.

Citing the Director-General's service and accomplishments in diplomacy and the multilateral system, Haverford President Tom Tritton conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

Speaking to the graduating class of 2006, the Director-General encouraged them to work to build bridges of international understanding throughout their lives. He recalled successes in international cooperation in the fields of education, humanitarian assistance and cultural preservation, including the rebuilding of the Mostar Bridge of Bosnia-Herzegovina, reopened in July 2004 after an international campaign coordinated by UNESCO.

The ceremony coincided with the 45th anniversary of the Director-General's graduation from the College; he received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in economics in 1961 from Haverford, a private, coeducational liberal arts College founded in 1833.
