The Director-General pays homage to the memory of Ms Jaroslava Moserova, President of the Czech National Commission to UNESCO, Representative of the Czech Republic to the Executive Board of UNESCO

“The news of the passing of Ms Jaroslava Moserova, which I received today, is deeply saddening. With her loss the UNESCO family and the entire international community are deprived of one of their most eminent members.

UNESCO had the great privilege of benefiting over many years from the immeasurable collaboration of Ms Moserova. In her functions as President of the Czech National Commission for UNESCO, then as President of the 30th General Conference, and more recently as Representative of the Czech Republic to the Executive Board of the Organization, Ms Moserova always upheld the ideals of UNESCO with determination, force and enthusiasm.

A great many of us at UNESCO appreciated her intelligence, her alert curiosity, her vast culture and her incomparable human and moral qualities. To work with her, was a wonderful opportunity for us and a source of human and intellectual enrichment. On a more personal level, I will carry with me the vivid memory of an exceptional woman, who, during my nomination as Director-General of UNESCO in 1999, honoured and befriended by welcoming me with rare kindness. Throughout these years I could always count upon her support and confidence.

Few people possess the intellectual, human, ethical and moral values that found expression in Ms Moserova. Like all those who had the opportunity to be at her side, I am pained today by a feeling of irremediable loss.

I want to pay homage here to the memory of a woman of exceptional qualities whose acts contributed greatly to the influence throughout the world not only of the Czech Republic but also UNESCO.”
