Signature of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

12-12-2005 - On 9 December 2005, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the President of the General Conference, Ambassador Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, signed, the text of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, adopted at the 33rd session of the General Conference last October.

This signature certifies the six language versions of the Convention, thus opening the path for its ratification by Member States.

The elaboration of the new judicial instrument is part of UNESCO’s continued efforts to defend cultural diversity and it follows a series of normative instruments aimed at protecting not only tangible and intangible heritage but also contemporary forms of creativity.

The new Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions complements the existing normative structure. It will enter into force three months after its ratification by 30 Member States.
