UNESCO WANTS TO INVOLVE ITS GOODWILL AMBASSADORS IN REBUILDING AFGHANISTAN

Paris - UNESCO will ask its Goodwill Ambassadors to join its efforts in the coming months to help rebuild Afghanistan’s educational, cultural and scientific life and its communication systems.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura has invited the ambassadors – prominent people from the worlds of culture, science, sport, business and politics – to the Organisation’s Paris Headquarters on February 11 and 12 for their annual meeting. They will discuss UNESCO’s programmes and priorities and assign a special field of activities for each of them in 2002, which has been declared United Nations Year for Cultural Heritage.

“UNESCO wants to rely more than ever before on the talents and commitment of its Goodwill Ambassadors to help convey its basic messages to the public all over the world,” Mr Matsuura said, adding that Afghanistan would be “at the centre of our concerns”.

“During my recent visit there, I was able to see first hand what a huge job it will be to rebuild the country, particularly in UNESCO’s areas of expertise,” he said. “Everything has to be reconstructed and UNESCO will be at Afghanistan’s side in this task. I would be delighted if our Goodwill Ambassadors could use their talent and fame to become advocates of Afghanistan’s cause with the general public and political leaders everywhere, so as to work usefully for the future of this great country.”
