Young researchers invited to apply for UNESCO/Suzanne Mubarak/Japan-Egypt Friendship Research Fellowships

UNESCO is inviting young post-graduate women researchers in developing countries with a Bachelorís or Masterís degree (or equivalent) to apply for the UNESCO/Suzanne Mubarak/Japan-Egypt Friendship Research Fellowships for the Empowerment of Women in Peace and Gender Studies (2006 Cycle)*. The fellowships are proposed by Egypt and financed by Japan.

The joint programme is named after the First Lady of Egypt, who actively supports womenís empowerment. It offers ten fellowships each worth up to US$7,500 to researchers under 40 years of age conducting innovative work in one of several fields: gender issues, the role of women in society, women and cultural heritage, women and culture of peace and development, and the role of women during armed conflict. This is the second year that these fellowships will be awarded. Beneficiaries will pursue their research at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria (Egypt).

UNESCO has called on its National Commissions, the Permanent Delegations to the Organization and field offices to invite potential candidates to apply for the fellowships through their National Commission, which will select a maximum of two candidates. Applications must be sent to UNESCO Headquarters in Paris by December 2, 2005.

A special selection committee will review the applications in order to make proposals to Director-General KoÔchiro Matsuura.
