The Nigeria Multipurpose Community Telecentre Programme arises from earlier activities of UNESCO within the UN System-wide Special Initiative on Africa, in which UNESCO (under the DANIDA Funds-in-Trust programme) teamed with the International DevelopmentResearch Centre (IDRC) and the ITU to sponsor a pilot programme to test the MCT concept in rural communities of five least developed African countries (Benin, Mali, Mozambique, Tanzania and Uganda). Several other partners (British Council, FAO, UNDP, WHO) are participating in the MCT consortium supporting these projects.
Based on initial exploratory work by UNESCO which indicated potential support by local Nigerian stakeholders and UN agencies for a pilot sustainable Multipurpose Community Telecentre (MCT) programme, UNESCO engaged the consultant under the Information for All programme in conjunction with the UNESCO national office in Abuja to prepare a project proposal following a 1 week mission to Nigeria in December 2001.
During the mission to Nigeria the consultant gathered general information about the current ICT environment and project activities in the country through existing contacts and through meetings set up by UNESCO Abuja with various representatives of the UN system, NGOs, Universities, Government departments and the private sector.
