Director-General expresses indignation at London transport attacks

07-07-2005 6:20 pm UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today expressed indignation at the announcement of deadly bomb attacks on London’s public transportation this morning. “Today, London is steeped in pain and sadness,” the Director-General declared. “I can but voice indignation at the tragedy that has struck the British capital,” “In this time of great suffering, I wish to express the solidarity of our Organization with Londoners and to present my sincere condolences to victims and their loved ones in this cruel ordeal.”

“The attacks perpetrated in London are outrageous,” Mr Matsuura added. “Just as attention was focused on London because of news about the Olympic games, which embody the values of understanding and fraternity, the city fell victim to a heinous act that nothing can justify,” the Director-General said, as he also conveyed his condolences to British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
