ACADEMIC YEAR
2005
APPLICATION AND ADMISSION
The advanced school is designed for, but not limited to, young researchers and PhD students, up to 35 years old, from scientific institutions in Europe who are studying theoretical and applied problems of thermodynamics and related issues. The school will present advanced methods and the most recent results of thermodynamics research and development aimed at quantifying non-equilibrium processes.
Applicants are invited to send their application as soon as possible and not later than
July 15, 2005, by post or on-line, through the
CISM website. All applications must include a detailed CV and, if applicable, a list of publications. A confirmation of admission to the Advanced School will be sent to all selected participants before
September 10, 2005.
The organizers of the Advanced School have established 25 CISM-UNESCO (ROSTE) short-term fellowships to be awarded to young scientists and PhD students. Interested applicants should indicate their need on the application form and include at least one letter of recommendation from their home institution.
The selection of recipients of these short-term fellowships will be made by the scientific organizing committee of the Advanced School. Preference will be given to applicants from European countries with economic difficulties. Each CISM UNESCO (ROSTE) short-term fellowship will include full coverage of lodging and board in Udine as well as possible social events and partial or full coverage of travel expenses. A poster session will be arranged to catalyze interaction between the students. All applicants are therefore encouraged to submit an abstract on the results of their research, written in English, along with their application. The five best abstracts will be selected by the scientific organizing committee and will be presented at one evening session. Their authors will also be invited to participate in the
High-Level Workshop on Quantifying Non Equilibrium Processes which will follow the Advanced School and take place from November 2 to 4, 2005 at CISM.
LECTURES
All lectures will be given in
English.
NEW PERSPECTIVES IN THERMODYNAMICS QUANTIFYING NON-EQUILIBRIUM PROCESSES
The main goal of the Advanced School is to promote understanding of thermodynamics and of its wide applicability and current developments by young scientists. We also wish to attract attention to the importance of reinforced presence of thermodynamics in university curricula where recently it has been rather neglected.
The choice of subjects dealt with in the Advanced School is intended to present new concepts and tools typical of present day thermodynamics research and to reinforce interest and enthusiasm in new generations of researchers in this field. Participants are expected to arrive in Udine on Wednesday, October 26 and to register at the CISM Secretariat between 8.30 and 9.30 on Thursday, October 27, 2005.
A detailed schedule will be available later on the
CISM website.
