By using the symbol of the Koi Nobori fish, this event aims to the sensibilization of the public, mainly the young generations to the values of a culture of peace and of non-violence, through cultural activities and workshops for children. The festival is named for the cloth banners in the shape of multicoloured carp, the Koi Nobori, which are displayed in the streets, on terraces and in gardens on the occasion of the children痴 holiday traditionally celebrated in Japan on May 5. On this occasion parents make wishes for their children
happiness, joy and health and give them a present that symbolizes the mythical virtues of the carp: energy, strength and perseverance.
This action is registered in the International Decade for a culture of Peace and non-violence for the children of the world, as a campaign for peace and international understanding that is being conducted by UNESCO and the International Youth Hostel Federation. The event taking place at the UN Pavilion is co-organized by the Japanese Youth Hostel Federation and the Franco-Japanese Cultural Centre in Paris.
