Montreal Celebrated as “World Book Capital City 2005-2006”Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, will mark the designation of Montreal as World Book Capital City 2005-2006 on April 26, 2005 at UNESCO Headquarters, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Greeted by performers from Cirque du Soleil, guests will be entertained, inspired and provoked by readings and poems evocative of Montreal. The event will bring together authors and artists, as well as public figures from the world of culture, diplomacy and international politics.
UNESCO named Montreal World Book Capital City from April 23, 2005 to April 22, 2006 in recognition of the quality of its programs to promote books and reading and the dedication of all players in the book industry. Montreal also has an extremely vibrant literary scene, at the crossroads of diverse cultures: French, English, Aboriginal, Caribbean, Hispanic as well as Oriental.
