  • Joan Miró (1893-1983)

Miro_250.jpg In November 1993, UNESCO celebrated the centenary of the Spanish artist’s birth with a whole day’s round of events: an international symposium on “Miró and the Arts”, an exhibition of his works and the unveiling of the commemorative medal in the presence of his friend and fellow Spanish artist Antoni Tàpies, who likewise designed it.

Miró is closely identified with UNESCO. The inauguration of the new headquarters building in 1958 coincided with the unveiling of one of the building’s major artworks, a double-walled mural, Wall of the Sun and Wall of the Moon created in situ by Miró and the ceramist José Llorens Artigas. The same year, it won the Guggenheim Foundation’s biennial international prize. Miró also designed UNESCO’s Picasso medal in 1981.

The Miró medal’s irregular shape evokes an archeological relic, inscribed Joan Miró, UNESCO Homenaje (Homage) on the obverse, 1893-1993 on the reverse. Both sides bear Tàpies’s hallmarks: crosses, inexplicable signs, references to graffiti, with suggestions of holes, tears and incisions.
