|The Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic and UNESCO issued this medal in 1992 on the occasion of the 400th birth anniversary of the Czech humanist. It is awarded at each session of the International Conference on Education organized by UNESCOís Geneva-based International Bureau of Education, to reward outstanding achievements in the fields of educational research and innovation.Born in Moravia and educated at Heidelberg University in Germany, he later became a clergyman. While living in Poland, he wrote his first books on the reform of the education system. Comenius is best known for his contributions to teaching techniques and is considered to be the first educator to have put forward the concept of international education.
The medalís obverse shows Comenius leading an assembly of different peoples from two sides of the globe. It bears the inscription of the Latinized form of his name Iohan Amos Comenius.
