To mark the 500th anniversary of Michelangelo’s birth, UNESCO issued the reproduction of a medal executed in 1561 by his contemporary Leone Leoni, Italian sculptor and medallist. The medal’s obverse shows Michelangelo at the ripe old age of 88 (Ann 88 appears on the medal) with inscriptions of his name in Latin, Michaelangelus Bonnarotus and his provenance, Florence (Flor).

The reverse is entitled Blind Man with a Staff and Water-flask, Led by a Dog, with a passage in Latin from the Book of Psalms: “I will teach the unjust Thy ways, and the wicked shall be converted to Thee.” This is UNESCO’s first medal in the anniversaries of outstanding persons series. (The original 1561 medal is at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.)

This medal was issued in 1974 and reissued in 2002 using a different design provided by the Paris Mint.

Available in gold and silver
