Message from the Director of the Office

We are delighted to welcome you to the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean Website. This Website provides information on our programmes and activities in the Caribbean.

As you know the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), was established on 16th of November 1945. It has its headquarters in Paris, France and field offices and units in different parts of the world.

Our Office was established in Kingston, Jamaica in 1979. Following wide-scale restructuring of its overall programme, in January 2002 this office became the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean with responsibility for 19 countries in the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean.

Our mandate is to serve the Caribbean region in the pursuit of peace and development through intellectual cooperation. The office also develops and implements activities and disseminates results when interventions are needed within the scope of UNESCO's programmes.

The UNESCO Office for the Caribbean is multidisciplinary in keeping with the five areas of UNESCO’s competence: Education, Natural Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information, and Social and Human Sciences. Special attention is also given to activities to help improve the condition of women and young people.

UNESCO National Commissions and other partners in the Caribbean are invited to contribute to this Website and welcome to establish a link if they wish.

We look forward to serving you.
