| Fund for Higher Education in Iraq |
Following the nomination of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned as UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education on 13 January 2003, H.H. Sheikha Mozah solicited UNESCO’s assistance for emergency relief of Iraqi universities and made a commitment to support UNESCO’s action in this field.
“A Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between UNESCO and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development concerning the establishment of an International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq” was signed at UNESCO Headquarters on 23 June 2003, on the occasion of the opening session of the Meeting of Higher Education Partners (World Conference on Higher Education: Five Years Later).
The main objective of this Fund is to “provide immediate and long-term assistance for the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq. Within the framework of international efforts and UNESCO’s action to ensure the renewal of the Iraqi education system, the Fund should, initially, make it possible to identify universities in urgent need of assistance, which will be able subsequently to be extended to other universities. The signed agreement will cover the initial rehabilitation and reconstruction period of three years and will then be reviewed by the founding members and contributing parties. As the first contributor, the State of Qatar decided to donate 15 millions US dollars.
