18-11-2004 6:30 pm The President of Serbia and Montenegro, Svetozar Marović, on an official visit to UNESCO on Friday November 19 will hold talks with the Organization’s Director-General Koďchiro Matsuura. At 11.30 in Room XI, they will address the Ambassadors and Permanent Delegates to UNESCO and at 7 p.m. at the residence of the Ambassador of Serbia and Montenegro, President Marović will present Mr Matsuura with the Vuk Karadžić Medal, First Degree, the country’s highest distinction in the realm of culture, education and the arts.

The visit of Svetozar Marović is the first by a Head of State of Serbia and Montenegro to UNESCO since the establishment of democracy in the country in 2000. It takes place within the framework of reinforced cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro and the Organization, of which one of the expressions was the celebration, in Belgrade, of World Press Freedom Day in May this year.

During their talks, the President and the Director-General, will discuss different aspects of this cooperation, including the safeguarding of cultural heritage, particularly in Kosovo.

That evening, Mr Matsuura will receive the Vuk Karadžić Medal, First Degree, from President Marović. The decoration is named after the greatest Serbian educator and literary figure of the 19th century, Vuk Karadžić (1787-1864), founder of the modern Serbian grammar, who also reformed the Cyrillic alphabet.
