Nurturing the democratic debate.  
23-09-2004 6:00 pm The President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr.Sam Nujoma will undertake an official visit to UNESCO Headquarters on Monday, September 27, during which he will make a presentation on the theme “Namibia: from liberation struggle to a peaceful and democratic society”.

Following a welcome from UNESCO Director-General Koďchiro Matsuura, the Chairperson of the UNESCO African Group of countries, Yvette Rabetafika Ranjeva (Madagascar), the Chairman of UNESCO’s Executive Board, Hans Heinrich Wrede (Germany) and Chairman of the Organization’s General Conference, Michael Abiola Omolewa (Nigeria), President Nujoma will address the Ambassadors, Permanent Delegates accredited to UNESCO and members of the Organization’s Secretariat.

Among the issues he will raise in his presentation are basic education for all, HIV/AIDS preventive education, human rights and democracy, intangible cultural heritage, and the role of science and technology in sustainable development. President Nujoma will also speak on the role of NEPAD, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, and “Vision 2030”, the Namibian strategy for development.

Born in 1929, Sam Nujoma is the historic leader of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), who, for over 30 years, led the struggle for Namibia’s independence. Exiled between 1960 and 1989, he was elected the country’s first President in february 1990. Re-elected in 1995 and 2000, he has decided not to stand for office again in the next elections due in Noevmber.
