| Ice hockey champion Vyatcheslav Fetisov nominated UNESCO Champion for Sport
27-05-2004 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, yesterday nominated Russian hockey champion Vyatcheslav Fetisov UNESCO Champion for Sport. |
Mr Fetisov is a double Olympic ice hockey Champion, 7-time World Champion, 10-time European Champion, and a 3-time winner of the Stanley Cup. This title was conferred on Mr Fetisov in recognition of his outstanding achievements in sport and his exemplary efforts to promote the values of physical education and sports with a view to building a better future for younger generations and his valuable support to the Organization’s ideals and objectives.
During a discussion preceding the nomination ceremony, Mr Matsuura referred to their first meeting in January 2003, when Mr Fetisov, in his capacity as the Head of the State Committee of the Russian Federation for Sports, Physical Education and Tourism, had participated in the Round Table of Ministers of Physical Education and Sport. The Director-General said he counted on Mr Fetisov’s support, particularly during 2005 - the United Nations International Year of Sport and Physical Education, “to ensure that a certain number of concrete actions are taken that will strengthen the place of physical education and sport within education systems and in society at large.”
In his address, the Director-General said that “values encouraged and developed by physical education and sport are supportive of the fundamental goals of UNESCO. Indeed, we believe that physical education and sport provide practical ways in which young people can acquire values, attitudes and modes of behaviour that will serve them well throughout their lives.” He called on Mr Fetisov to support UNESCO’s efforts “to ensure that the right of access to physical education and sport is enjoyed by everyone throughout the world”.
Mr Fetisov joins three outstanding sport personalities: Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher; Olympic Judo Champion David Douillet, and pole-vaulting Olympic Champion Serhiy Bubka, who as UNESCO Champions for Sport are spreading UNESCO’s message all over the world.
