Nurturing the democratic debate.  
16-04-2004 2:00 pm Children in over 100 countries will lobby their local, regional and national leaders next week, to encourage them to do more to enrol all children in school. The “Big Lobby” is organized by the Global Campaign for Education with UNESCO and is one of the highlights of Education for All (EFA) week (April 19-25).

This year’s EFA week will focus on the 100 million children around the world who have no access to education, and will attempt to raise awareness of this fundamental human right, the denial of which makes children more vulnerable to poverty, hunger, violence, exploitation and disease.

The Big Lobby comprises four main activities: first, on April 20 children will gather at national parliaments, state and provincial assemblies and village councils to ask their elected representatives to do more to enrol all children; second, throughout the week, children will send letters to presidents and prime ministers with the same message; third, teachers will invite politicians to visit their schools and participate in a learning activity with children; and, fourth, school children will make maps of their village, neighbourhood or community indicating the households with children who do not attend school.

Other highlights of EFA week include:

  • the launch in Geneva of At What Age…are school children employed, married and taken to court? by the research network Right-to-Education and UNESCO’s International Bureau of Education (11.45, April 20, United Nations Office at Geneva).

  • the launch at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on the latest Global Education Digest, published by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. This edition focuses on school-life-expectancy of children.

  • In Morocco, Adbelatif Benazzi, former French rugby captain, is organizing “the oriental sports week” in his hometown Oujda, who are out of school. The children will be joined by some 150 French youngsters from underprivileged backgrounds.
