  • Ukrainian athlete Serhiy Bubka designated UNESCO Champion for Sport

    04-11-2003 6:00 pm Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, designated Ukrainian athlete Mr Serhiy Bubka as UNESCO Champion for Sport at a nomination ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters on 4 November 2003.

    Mr Bubka was so designated in recognition of his role in the promotion of peace and tolerance through sport and the Olympic spirit, his humanitarian activities in favour of young people, his action to enable disadvantaged children to benefit from physical education and his dedication to the Organization’s ideals.

    Six times World Champion (1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995 et 1997), European Champion (1986) and Olympic Champion (1988, Seoul), Mr Serhiy Bubka is the founder of a Sport Club for Children in Donetsk, Ukraine, which has 300 members. He is also a member of the Regional and Public Coordination Board for the Social Protection of Handicapped and Orphaned Children.

    “…Allow me on this occasion to stress the importance UNESCO attaches to sports and physical education as key dimensions of education as a whole as well as personal development in general. We believe that sporting activities are important for individual good health, active recreation, social participation, constructive teamwork and the application of ethical principles…”, said Mr Matsuura during the nomination ceremony.

    Mr Jean-François Lamour, Minister of Sports of France, Mr Mykola Kostenko, Minister of Physical Culture and Sport of Ukraine, H. E. Mr Yuriy Sergeyev, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Ukraine to UNESCO, attended the nomination ceremony.
