Director-General condemns murder of Peruvian journalist

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today condemned the murder of radio journalist Antonio de la Torre Echeandía in the city of Yungay in the Ancash region of Peru on February 14.

“I condemn the killing of Antonio de la Torre Echeandía,” Mr Matsuura said, adding,“I am confident that the authorities will do all they can to investigate this heinous crime fully and punish those responsible for it, in keeping with the resolution adopted by UNESCO’s Member States in 1997 calling for an end to impunity for attacks on journalists.”

Speaking of the stabbing to death of Mr De la Torre Echeandía who is reported to have received death threats after airing complaints by residents against the local authorities, the Director-General declared: “This murder is a sad event for press freedom in Peru, where journalists in recent years had come to expect to be able to exercise their profession in acceptable conditions. Free and independent media play an essential role in democracy, attacking journalists weakens democracy and rule of law,” he concluded.
