Kazan is one of the oldest cities of the Russian Federation. The spiritual and cultural heritage of the town of Kazan is recognized worldwide. The city was founded at the favourable crossing of the Great Road of the Volga and the North Commercial Road of the Fur, which linked the countries of Europe and Asia between IXth and Xth century. The foundation of Kazan is related to the old history of the Tatar people and their ancestors - Bulgars of the Volga, creating in this area the state of Bulgaria of the Volga. In the XIIIth century Kazan became the administrative and religious centre of the state of the Golden Horde, during the XVth-XVIth centuries Kazan was the capital of Khanat. In the second half the XVIth century Kazan formed part of Russia, becoming its Eastern gate, as well as a crossroad of Moslem-Christian contacts. The modern city of Kazan with its Historical and Architectural Complex of the Kazan Kremlin, included in 2000 in the UNESCO World Heritage List, its mosques, churches, museums and establishments of instruction, is renowned worldwide.
