Nurturing the democratic debate.  
19-01-2004 11:00 am Paris, January 16 –Ministers of Education along with education authorities and experts from throughout the Arab States will meet in Beirut (Lebanon) from January 20-23 to decide on future steps to be taken at national and regional levels to achieve quality Education for All (EFA)*.
Organized by UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Education in Beirut, and under the patronage of Rafic Hariri, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, the meeting will focus on three themes: The status of education and the current challenges in the Arab States; EFA National Plans in the Arab States; and Improving education quality. A number of round tables will be held on various aspects of literacy and early childhood (January 21, 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.), and how to improve the quality of education (January 22, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.).

The opening ceremony (January 20, 10 a.m.) will be attended by Prime Minister Hariri, the Director-General of the Islamic Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ISESCO), Abdelaziz Al-Twaijri, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Education, John Daniel, and the Director of the Beirut bureau, Victor Billeh.

Participants will include Arab Ministers of Education and high ranking ministry officials, EFA national coordinators and partners in the UN agencies, Arab regional organizations and partners, civil organizations and regional and international experts. They will seek to harmonize their action in order to achieve the EFA goals according to the Arab Framework for Action adopted by the Arab Conference on EFA (Cairo, 2000); the World Framework for Action (Dakar, 2000) and the priorities of the EFA National Plans in each country.


The World Education Forum (Dakar, Senegal 2000) set six goals for achieving Education For All by 2015 and called upon States to establish national plans to reach these objectives. For more information go to: http://www.unesco.org/education/efa/wef_2000
