Director-General voices deep sadness at the death of Michel Barton

01-12-2003 4:00 pm The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today expressed his deep sadness at the death of Michel Barton, Director of UNESCO’s Bureau of Public Information, of cardiac failure during a flight from Montreal to Washington, on his way back from mission, on Thursday, November 27.michel_barton_insid.jpg

The Director-General spoke of the “great loss of a valued colleague” and said: “At this difficult time, my heart goes out to Michel’s wife and family, to whom I shall be sending my deepest personal condolences, as well as the condolences of the whole of UNESCO. All of his colleagues and friends, both here at UNESCO and at the other UN agencies he served with such great expertise and commitment over many years, will be devastated by this sad news,” declared Mr Matsuura.

“I am sure you will share with me and the Secretariat a sense of deep sadness at what has happened,” Mr Matsuura told the Permanent Delegates of UNESCO Member States gathered in a meeting on Education for All.
