    ELECTION OF 29 MEMBERS TO EXECUTIVE BOARD

    Paris, October 10 – The 190 Member States of UNESCO, assembled for the 32nd Session of the General Conference, UNESCO’s supreme ruling body, today elected 29 new representatives to the 58-member Executive Board, the other governing body of the Organization, in one round of voting.

  • Candidates for election are divided into five electoral groups. The following States were elected today (in descending order of votes obtained):

    Group I: Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, United States of America

    Group II: Russian Federation, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary

    Group III: Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Uruguay

    Group IV: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Cambodia, Pakistan, Afghanistan

    Group V(a): Mauritius, Cameroon, Namibia, Cape Verde, Mali, Congo, Ghana

    Group V(b): Bahrain, Morocco, Yemen.

    The members of the Executive Board are elected for four years. The candidates elected today join the 29 other Member States, elected to the Board at the last Session of the General Conference (2001), whose term expires in 2005. Group I: Germany, Iceland, United Kingdom, Turkey. Group II: Belarus, Slovakia, Ukraine. Group. III: Bahamas, Brazil, Cuba, Dominica, Jamaica, Suriname. Group IV: Australia, China, India, Japan, Vanuatu, Vietnam V(a): Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mozambique, United Republic of Tanzania, Rwanda, Senegal, Swaziland. Group V (b): Algeria, Egypt, Jordan.

    The Executive Board meets twice a year to examine the implementation of programmes adopted by the General Conference. The new Executive Board will meet after the 32nd session of the General Conference on October 20 to elect its Bureau, including the chairperson, vice-chairs, and chairpersons of commissions and committees.
