UNESCO and China sign Memorandum of Understanding

01-10-2003 - Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, and His Excellency Mr Zhou Ji, Minister of Education of the People’s Republic of China, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today, during the bilateral meeting that they held within the context of UNESCO’s ongoing General Conference.

The agreement covers a period of four years and its main focus is in the field of education. It makes provision for an enhanced contribution of the Chinese Ministry of Education to the development of education at the international level, principally through an increase in the number of China/UNESCO co-sponsored Great Wall Fellowships, as well as short-term research and study visits to China for international rural education experts and scholars; the launching of an inter-regional co-operative project on rural education in sub-Saharan Africa, together with UNESCO’s African Regional Bureau for Education; the implementation of international and regional programmes for the strengthening of China’s Heritage Research and Educational Training Centre; and the hosting, organisation and co-sponsoring, with UNESCO, of international seminars, workshops, meetings and conferences.

In addition, China will continue to contribute to the Asia-Pacific Programmes of Educational Innovation for Development and for Education for All, and will arrange for visits of Chinese professionals to UNESCO’s International Bureau of Education in Geneva and other educational institutes, for long-term service and training, as well as short-term technical support.

For its part, UNESCO pledges to continue to extend its support and assistance to China’s educational efforts, most particularly in the areas of education for rural development, education for all, and higher education. The Organization will furthermore give support to China’s international co-operative programmes within the Global Forum on Quality Assurance, Creditation and Recognition of Qualifications in Higher Education; promote the Chinese flagship Project on Environment and Population Education for Development; and aid in the strengthening of science and technology education for all as part of China’s effort to further education and capacity-building in science and technology and education for HIV/AIDS prevention.
