FILM PROJECTION: Becoming a Navigator, Becoming a Priest

Premiere - 19:0020:30, UNESCO Salle du Cinema (Fontenoy building)

    Documentary film produced by UNESCO-LINKS & CNRS/MNHN, 2003.

In June 2002, the people of Satawal Island, Federated States of Micronesia, hosted an exceptional event. For the first time, one of their own was ordained as a Priest. But this was no ordinary ordination. It incorporated part of the traditional Pwo ceremony, whereby young Satawalese men were once initiated as Master Navigators. The revival of the Pwo as part of a Jesuit ordination is an occasion for both rejoicing and controversy, including strong words about acquiring knowledge, status and spiritual power by Mau Pialug - the last navigator to be initiated on the island 30 years ago and a leading figure in the Pacific-wide revival of voyaging.
