  • Biography of Valdas Adamkus
  • H.E. Mr Valdas Adamkus was born in Kaunas, Lithuania.

  • In 1944 H.E. Mr Adamkus emigrated to Germany with his parents. He returned to Lithuania the fall of the same year to join the National Defence Force in fight against the Red Army. Upon graduation from the Lithuanian Gymnasia in Germany, Adamkus entered the Faculty of Natural Science of the University of Munich.

  • In 1949 H.E. Mr Valdas Adamkus emigrates to the United States of America with his family. In 1960, H.E. Mr Adamkus graduated as a construction engineer from the University of Illinois.

  • At the beginning of the sixties H.E. Mr Adamkus was vice-chairman and president of the Santara-Sviesa Federation, a public organization of Lithuanian students in the United States of America. He was an active organizer of protest actions against Lithuania’s occupation by URSS. From 1961 to 1964, H.E. Mr Adamkus was a member of the Board of the Lithuanian Community in America, vice-chairman of the Central Board, member and the chairman of the American Lithuanian Council.

  • At the beginning of the Seventies, H.E. Mr Adamkus headed a scientific environmental research centre and was late appointed deputy administrator of the Fifth Region (Mid-West) Environmental Protection Agency (1981-1997). Since 1972 he visited Lithuania several times a year. In 1992 H.E. Mr Adamkus headed the electoral campaign of presidential candidate Statys Lozoraitis in Lithuania.

  • H.E. Mr Adamkus was elected the President of Lithuania in 1998. President H.E. Mr Adamkus, (1998-2003) was anxious to preserve the continuation of the strategic objectives of the Lithuanian foreign policy – joining of his country to NATO and to the European Union.

  • In 2004 His Excellency Mr Adamkus was elected President of Lithuania
