Message from the Director-General of UNESCO on the occasion of International Literacy Day, 8 September 2003 - (Office of the Spokeswoman)
09-09-2003 - It is both good and necessary that we celebrate International Literacy Day each year. For some of us, it is a timely reminder that we should not take literacy for granted or underestimate its importance. For others, newly empowered by the acquisition of literacy skills, it is a moment to celebrate access to opportunities once beyond reach. It is an occasion, furthermore, to applaud the work of literacy tutors, extension workers and volunteers whose patient and persistent efforts make such a difference to people’s lives. However, it is for those excluded from the world of writing and written communication that International Literacy Day is most significant, for it symbolizes our collective commitment to address their literacy needs now and in the future. . Young people - defined by the United Nations to mean those aged between 15 and 24 – make up one-fifth of the world population. In the current configuration of culture and society, youth is a group with distinctive needs, problems and concerns which require concerted action. We ignore the needs of youth at our peril. More |

Message of the Director-General of UNESCO for World Press Freedom Day 3 May 2003 - (Office of the Spokeswoman)
29-04-2003 - Each year on World Press Freedom Day, attention is drawn to the importance of press freedom as a prerequisite of a healthy, functioning democracy in which people are free to speak their minds. Let us recall Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that “everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”. Without free, independent and pluralistic media, how can the public make informed electoral choices, review the public decision-making process, or have effective input into public affairs? Consequently, journalists play a vital role in the democratic process, but it is a role that may attract certain risks. More |
