| Visit of the Director-General to the Russian Federation (30 May to 4 June 2003)
30-05-2003 - The Director-General is undertaking an official visit to the Russian Federation from 30 May to 4 June 2003. He will successively visit St Petersburg, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, the Republic of Tatarstan and Moscow. |
From 30 May to 1 June, Mr Matsuura will participate in ceremonies organized within the framework of the 300th anniversary celebration of the city of St Petersburg, in the presence of several heads of state and leading personalities coming from all corners of the world on the invitation of the President of the Russian Federation, Mr Vladimir Putin.
From 1-2 June, the Director-General will pay an official visit to the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, responding to an invitation he received from the President Alexandre Dzassokhov during the President’s visit to UNESCO Headquarters last March. The President and the Director-General will continue their discussions on strengthening cooperation between UNESCO and the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, particularly in the fields of education, the sciences, the ecology of mountain regions, and culture. During his visit to Vladikavkaz, Koïchiro Matsuura will attend an international conference of university rectors from the Caucasus.
On 3 June, Koïchiro Matsuura will visit Tatarstan where he will hold talks with the President of the Republic, Mr Mintimer Shaimiev. During his stay, the Director-General will visit the University of Kazan where he will attend the opening of the Student Forum of the Russian Federation. Mr Matsuura will also visit the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, the UNESCO Chair on the Training and Retraining of Specialists Under Market Economy Conditions. Accompanied by the city’s mayor, Mr Iskhakov, the Director-General will visit one of the 16 sites in the Russian Federation on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, namely the Kremlin of Kazan, inscribed in 1998.
Koïchiro Matsuura will then leave for Moscow where he will meet, on 4 June, the mayor of the city, Mr Yuri Luzhkov. He will then visit the Church of Ascension in Kolomenkoye, built in 1532, which is also on the World Heritage List. Before leaving Moscow, he will visit at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts accompanied by Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Academy and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
