| World Poetry Day: Tribute to Nazim Hikmet
20-03-2002 - - “My brothers, Despite my fair hair I am Asian, Despite my blue eyes I am African..." Nazim Hikmet |
On 21 March each year UNESCO celebrates World Poetry Day.
To mark the occasion, a ceremony will be held at UNESCO Headquarters on Thursday, 21 March 2002, at 6.30 p.m., to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the great Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet. This tribute will be followed by a debate led by Mr Bozkurt Aran, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Turkey to UNESCO.
In a message issued for World Poetry Day, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura calls on political leaders, educators and civil society as a whole to strive constantly to ensure a lasting place of honour for poetry, “for loving poetry helps us to love others”.
