17-03-2003 - In direct line with the “Guidelines for the Implementation of the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights” adopted by UNESCO’s General Conference in 1999, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, took the initiative of proposing to the Secretary-General of the United Nations the establishment of an Inter-Agency Committee with a view to ensuring improved coordination of activities and thinking on bioethics throughout the United Nations system. 25-02-2003 - The UNESCO Director-General, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, met the Italian Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon.Mario Baccini on Tuesday 25 February 2003 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. On this occasion UNESCO and Italy signed the “Joint Declaration between UNESCO and the Government of Italy in the field of Education for All and Follow-up of the World Education Forum in Dakar in April 2000”, under which Italy has already granted to UNESCO a contribution of US$ 1.8 million. Three projects in favour of UNESCO activities for Education for All in Africa to be established by Italy under the Joint Declaration signed today are going to be launched in the upcoming days. More |

14-02-2003 - The official international launch of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012) took place yesterday at United Nations headquarters, New York. The keynote speaker at the main ceremony was the President of Mongolia, Mr Natsagiin Bagabandi, who had sponsored the Resolution in the UN General Assembly that called for the establishment of the Decade. Other speakers included Mme Louise Frechette, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, and the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura. The congress, on the theme “Shared Legacy, Common Responsibility”, was held at the Cini Foundation from 14 to 16 November and was attended by more than 500 participants, many Permanent Delegates and representatives of Member States, and also several UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors including HRH Princess Firyal, Ms Marianna Vardinoyannis and Wole Soyinka, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. La participation du Directeur général de l’UNESCO à ce séminaire revêt une signification particulière alors que l’Organisation s’est vu confier le rôle de chef de file au sein du système des Nations Unies pour l’année 2003 déclarée Année internationale de l’eau douce. La résolution de l’ONU proclamant l’année 2003 « Année internationale de l’eau douce » est le résultat d’une initiative lancée par le gouvernement du Tadjikistan et soutenue par 148 autres pays.
