  • Terrorist Attack on UN Headquarters in Baghdad

    The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, has condemned yesterday’s terrorist bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad as an outrage committed not only against the United Nations but also against the people of Iraq. He is deeply shocked by the tragic loss of life of UN Special Envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello and at least 19 others and by the injuries suffered by a further 100 or more people. Mr Matsuura has sent a letter of condolence to UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, expressing his sorrow concerning the deaths of all the international and national UN personnel and other innocent victims of this brutal act of violence. He has also sent a letter to the President of Brazil in which he offers his condolences to the family of Mr Vieira de Mello and to the Brazilian people for their loss of someone of such outstanding abilities, accomplishments and promise. More
