Nurturing the democratic debate.
01-04-2003 6:00 pm Paris – More than five thousand participants, including UNESCO Director-General Ko´chiro Matsuura, are expected to take part in the second UNESCO Race, which will be held on Saturday, April 5. After offering some words of encouragement to the assembled runners, Mr Matsuura will signal the start of the race.
The 5.2 km race will begin at 8.30 am at the entrance to UNESCO’s Headquarters, Place de Fontenoy, and will follow a course across the Seine River to the finish line at Avenue Foch, where breakfast will be served.

The event is not race against the clock, but a friendly get-together. The race will highlight the importance UNESCO attaches to physical education and sport as a contribution to everyone’s quality of life. It is being organized by UNESCO (Section for Preventive Education and Sport), and is supported by the organizers of the International Marathon of Paris, which will be held the following day.

Participants will be able to register for the UNESCO Race from 2 pm on Thursday, April 3 at Hall N6 in the Parc des Expositions at the Porte de Versailles. The race is open to all-comers.

The first race, last year, drew some 4,500 participants.
