01-04-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, and the President of the Republic of North Ossetia Alania, Alexandre Dzassokhov, inaugurated, on Monday 31 March, the Republic of North Ossetia Alania Days at UNESCO. The programme includes a photo exhibition, a folk music and dance concert and a round-table discussion on the theme of “The Caucasus: Safeguarding Cultural Heritage, Mountain Ecology and Sustainable Development”. |
During a meeting held before the opening of this event, the Director-General and the President Dzassokhov informed the Director-General of the satisfaction expressed by President of the Russian Federation at the close ties established with UNESCO. They then reviewed cooperation between UNESCO and the Republic of North Ossetia Alania. Mr Kalamanov, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, also attended the meeting.
The Director-General and President Dzassokhov discussed in particular the strengthening of cooperation in the fields of education, science, mountain region ecology, culture, the safeguarding of natural and cultural heritage and intercultural dialogue. They were gratified to note that the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development, Environmental Sciences and Social Problems, established at the State University of North Ossetia in 1997, had become one of the flagship intellectual centres in the region for the promotion of UNESCO’s ideals.
The Director-General welcomed the possibility of continuing discussions with President Putin and President Dzassokhov, on the occasion of his official visit to the Russian Federation, next June.
Koïchiro Matsuura was also pleased to appoint the world re-renowned conductor, Mr Valery Guerguiev, who hails from North Ossetia Alania, and is currently Director of the Mriinsky Theatre of Saint Petersbourg, as UNESCO Artist for Peace through Dialogue Between Cultures and Civilizations.
