The United Nations has declared 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism.
Recognizing the increasing global importance of ecotourism, the United Nations has declared 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its Division of Technology, Industry and Economics have taken the lead in organizing and promoting activities for the Year at the international level.

The main event is the World Ecotourism Summit, which took place in Quebec City (Canada) from 19 to 22 May and which wasthe largest ever gathering of all stakeholders involved in or affected by ecotourism: Over 1100 participants from 133 countries. Among the summit's outputs is the Quebec Declaration on Ecotourism, a new tool for the international development of this typeof tourism which is already in high demand in many regions of the world.

UNESCO’s statement to the Summit emphasized the Organization's role in promoting ethical principles, providing normative frameworks and contributing to standard setting through pilot projects in such fields as cultural tourism and the testing of innovative approaches to ecotourism in biosphere reserves and World Heritage sites.
