  Experts' Workshop on Science, Technology, Innovation and Development,
Manchester 27-29 February 2008


Conference sessions were organised to focus attention on key aspects of the debate through brief, focussed papers commissioned for the Workshop. The central emphasis is on discussion towards a research agenda. Examples of successful innovation will were discussed alongside evidence to highlight the key priorities for future research in this neglected field.

The debate focused on the following topics:

o Technology and the nature of development;
o The innovation process in relation to development
o Skill and human capital in the innovation process;
o Innovation systems and other institutional factors in developing economies and the role of Universities;
o Science and development
o Indigenous and external knowledge generation processes;
o The role of multinationals in transferring technology and the role of indigenous capability;
o Policy to foster innovation;
o Innovation in public services including health and education;
o The future research agenda.

The outcome will be a significant communiqué within a fortnight of the event, highlighting priorities for research in this important field. Influencing opinion through media outlets will be an important feature of the Workshop. The Workshop will be reported in full in Technology and Strategic Management. Individual contributions may also be published in revised form.
