More than 200 NGOs and grassroots organizations in Africa are joining hands to promote civil society participation in education. They will meet in Lilongwe, Malawi from 30 September to 2 October to discuss how best to have an impact on the upcoming 8th Conference of Ministers of Education of African Member States (MINEDAF VIII).

The participants will include representatives from national and local NGOs and civil society organizations (CSOs), education coalitions and networks, regional African networks and representatives from international NGOs working in education in Africa. The Ministers of Education from Malawi and Nigeria will address the meeting and several bi- and multilateral partners will participate as observers.

The objectives of the consultation are to:

(i) prepare substantive contributions to MINEDAF VIII, including a working document on civil society perspectives on EFA, input to the Panels, the Special session between Ministers and civil society and the exhibition,

(ii) expand ownership and participation with regard to Regional NGO/CSO Capacity- building programs in support of EFA in Sub-Saharan Africa and,

(iii) explore ways to reinforce and expand UNESCO consultative mechanisms with African NGOs and other civil society organizations.

The consultation is jointly organized by the Collective Consultation of NGOs on Education for All (CCNGO/EFA), members of the African Group to UNESCO, the Government of Malawi and UNESCO.
