A life lived for education and women’s empowerment

Dr Lalage Bown, who spent more than 30 years working in Adult Education at Universities in Zambia and Nigeria, will give the International Literacy Day Lecture on ‘Literacy and Empowerment’ at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on September 8.

She gives EduInfo a sneak preview of her lecture and talks about her life spent in the field of adult education and female empowerment.

UNESCO Literacy Prize winners for 2009 are announced

A newspaper produced entirely by women in rural India is among the winners of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes this year. Innovative literacy projects in Burkina Faso, Afghanistan and the Philippines have won the other three awards, while a programme in Bhutan received an Honourable Mention.

The 2009 laureates were proclaimed by the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, on the recommendation of an international Jury:
Tin Tua - Burkina Faso
Nirantar - India
SERVE - Afghanistan
Municipal Literacy Coordination - Philippines
Continuing Education Programme - Bhutan
