Education for Holocaust Remembrance
About Education for Holocaust Remembrance
During UNESCO’s 34th General Conference in October 2007, Member States adopted General Resolution 61, which requests that UNESCO explore the role it can play in promoting awareness of Holocaust remembrance through education and in combating all forms of Holocaust denial.
This resolution was adopted in recognition of United Nations Assembly resolution 60/7, which designated 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration of the Holocaust. It also recalls the General Assembly’s adoption of Resolution 61/255, which “condemns without any reservation any denial of the Holocaust.”
UNESCO works in concert with the UN Outreach Programme and the Holocaust to promote learning materials and educational resources that use the lessons of the Holocaust to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills that will help students become more tolerant and prevent future genocides.
