This report on seventeen sub-Saharan countries constitutes a major collaboration by various scholars. This compilation benefited greatly from the fact that the work on these country profiles corresponded with two other initiatives, which had similar objectives. The first was a project, funded by the South African Department of Science and Technology. This project supported the work of scholars at CREST and High Impact Innovation and enabled us to compile a total of 22 country profiles. Fourteen of the country studies presented here were therefore co-funded under this joint project. The second one is the Science in Africa project co-ordinated by Roland Waast and Jacques Gaillard with funding from the European Commission and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the end of the 1990s. The latter produced 14 country profiles of which three in particular were used in the present project (Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Cote d’Voire). The complete set of original reports from this project is available at www.ird.fr/science/dss. The compilers also wish to acknowledge the input of Florence Verlhac who translated these three reports from the original French as well as updated the main indicator tables for these countries.
