Quality Teachers for Quality Education
World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers on 5 October 1966. This year's World Teachers' Day observance is particularly important in that it commemorates the 40th anniversary of the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation. More than 100 countries currently celebrate World Teachers’ Day on 5 October.

The Joint Message on the Occasion of World Teachers’ Day 2006 can be found below in the 6 official languages of the United Nations. Readers can also read the text of previous years' Joint Messages and find links to various organizations and projects that are involved in the promotion of this year's World Teachers' Day.
