Universities as Centers of Research and Knowledge Creation: An Endangered Species?

The UNESCO Forum on Higher Education, Research & Knowledge organized its second international Colloquium on Research and Higher Education Policy, from 29 November to 1st December 2006 at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris, France).
Colloquia gather researchers, experts and policy-makers and consist of plenary sessions and thematic workshops presenting studies on general and crosscutting themes for discussion and debate.
The second edition of this major event focused on 'Universities as Centers of Research and Knowledge Creation: An Endangered Species?'.
The main purposes of the event were:- to examine the current issues facing universities, (notably those in the developing world), in relation to the research function, which is vital for the formulation of innovative national development policies;
- to propose effective strategies for the development and reinforcement of this function.
These issues were explored in concrete terms through plenary sessions and thematic workshops focused on Research Capacity, Research Productivity, and the Relevance and Utility of Research.
