The Regional Conference on Education for Sustainable Development : « New Approaches to the Future » to be held in Kingston, Jamaica from 18-20 October 2005 will serve to launch the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean.

UNESCO's Office for the Caribbean and the University of the West Indies, in association with other agencies, are collaborating to convene the Regional Conference on Education for Sustainable Development, with the theme “New Approaches for the Future” to be held in Kingston, Jamaica on October 18-20, 2005.

The objective is to provide a forum to discuss ESD and facilitate the exchange of information and experiences, fostering dialogue among education professionals. The conference will start with an opening ceremony and reception at Mona Lodge, UWI, and during the following two days at the Hilton Hotel, Kingston, will include presentations, work sessions and times of informal interaction. This regional conference will also serve to launch the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014) in the Caribbean region; and for many persons, it will be an awareness-building, paradigm-shifting experience. The one hundred and fifty participants expected from several Caribbean countries encompass a wide range of education stakeholders, from those in both public and private educational administration, through teacher educators and teachers, community educators, environmental education organizations to young persons from the region actively involved in a variety of clubs and associations.
