The Joint Programme and the programme Espérance et Solidarité autour d'un Ballon joined forces for Literacy Day (8 September).Various sporting activities were organized in several areas in Madagascar with the participation of sports celebrities such as Marie-José Pérec and others. |
Espérance et Solidarité autour d'un Ballon
Created in 1993, the programme aims to reach underprivileged children through athletics, cultural and playful activities. Famous sportsmen such as David Ginola, Bernard Lama, Paolo Cesar, Youri Djorkaëff, Georges Weah, Marie-José Pérec, David Douillet, Abdelatif Benazzi, Marie Pearce, Cédric Pioline, among others, have participated in the programme.
Sports are beneficial to underprivileged children, and more specifically to street children, as it is an effective way of interacting with them, but also having them interact with the rest of society as it familiarizes them with certain social concepts and rules. Sports therefore, do not only bring momentary joy to these children but by teaching them basic socialization rules and, by promoting a culture of peace, they create the conditions necessary to their healthy development and to their reintegration in society. Eventually, it allows them to find an appropriate path towards education.
The programme is part of the “Literacy Initiative For Empowerment” (LIFE), a large UNESCO programme of action in support of the achievement of Education for All, and a key operational mechanism to substantially increase literacy learning opportunities within the framework of the United Nations Literacy Decade. Its action is world-wide and concerns mainly developing countries, particularly the ones in post-conflict situations.
The implementation of the programme would not have been possible without the generosity and kind contribution of sponsors such as Adidas, Decathlon, Converse, Lacoste, Monoprix, Perrier, Renault, Shell, Volvic, Umbro, etc. |
