International Launch of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) on March 1 in New York The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) will be officially launched at UN Headquarters in New York on the afternoon of 1st March 2005, by UNESCO’s Director General Koïchiro Matsuura. The launch of the Decade event will be preceeded in the middle of the afternoon by a round table of experts on the major challenges and objectives for the implementation of the Decade. The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) aims to see Education for Sustainable Development implemented in thousands of local situations on the ground, involving the integration of the principles of Sustainable Development into a multitude of different learning situations.
