OCHA Situation Report no. 20

Education: Latest statistics indicate that 70 schools are destroyed and 95 are damaged.

The Education Sectoral Working Croup in Jaffna agreed on arrangements to guarantee the continuity of classes for 5,000 students while 12 schools are still being used as Temporary Accommodation Centres. Arrangements include evening classes, temporary classrooms and safe transportation. UNICEF will support 15 temporary classrooms, 13 of which will be constructed using locally available materials and two will be in tents. The Center for National Operations (CNO) requested UNICEF to work with the Ministry of Education on child-friendly school building design, criteria and guidelines. Education supply-distribution lists were finalized on 19 January 2005 and distribution will commence on 21 January 2005. In Ampara, three temporary school buildings are currently being constructed with support of UNICEF. School kits and tarpaulins have been provided. Nine directly-affected schools in Trincomalee have managed to re-open with UNICEF provision of tents and tarpaulin sheets.
